at 7:30 Switzerland. Seven to nine notes are harmonically tuned around a deep note which is formed by the Helmholtz (cavity) resonance of the instrument body. We describe the modes of vibration observed with holographic interferometry and the sound radiation field from the instrument using an intensity probe in an anechoic room.
Speaker Biography: (Distinguished Research Professor of Physics Emeritus, Northern Illinois University and Visiting Professor of Music at Stanford) is the author of over 400 publications, including 15 books, mostly on magnetism and acoustics. He has directed church choirs and handbell choirs, played clarinet in orchestras and chamber ensembles, and appeared as tenor soloist. He has been a visiting professor at universities in Sweden, Germany, Australia, and Scotland as well as in the United States. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, The Acoustical Society of America, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and IEEE. He was awarded the Silver Medal in Musical Acoustics by the Acoustical Society of America and the Robert Millikan Medal by the American Association of Physics Teachers. His biography appears in Who’s Who in America and in the New Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians.
