Topic:
Absorption Coefficients: The Myths, the Answers and the Case for Getting Rid of the Coefficient
Abstract
In attempting to correlate the measurements of Absorption Coefficients in ASTM-C423, ISO-354 and ISO 17497-1 it was observed that the results were varying to a large degree. An experiment was set up with 1, 2 and 4 inch, 6 lb density fiberglass panels having different shapes, sizes and parameters. The shapes, sizes and parameters of the panels are described as well as the types of experiments. The process was based upon input from many of the members of the industry. It was observed that the edges of the sample had a significant effect
on the Absorption Coefficient. The
results of these experiments are presented in Numerical and Graphical Form. The conclusions and suggested corrections to the methods of measuring and the use of Absorption values are also presented.
Biography
Ron Sauro served in the USAF (1964-1968) as a "Heavy Ground Radar Technician" in isolated sites such as the DEW Line and Viet Nam. As a Technician and Researcher at the NASA Ames Research Center (1968-1972) he specialized in low field magnetics and helped design experiments for the Apollo Missions including the Lunar Surface Magnetometer (LSM) and the Lunar Portable Magnetometer (LPM). He also designed Magnetics experiments on the Voyager, Pioneer and Viking Spacecrafts.
From 1973 to 1980 he was a recording and touring musician heading groups in Las Vegas. He was Proprietor and Owner of Ron's Keyboard and Electronics Services, Tacoma, WA from 1980 to 1995. As Owner of Northwest Audio and Acoustics (1989-2004) Ron designed and installed acoustic corrections and speaker systems in diverse places and facilities. These includes Las Vegas Speedway; University Presbyterian Church in Seattle; Qurum Amphitheater in Muscat, Oman; Hollywood Park Race Track in Inglewood, CA and the Statuary Hall
in the U.S. Capitol Building. Since 2004 Ron has been President of NWAA Labs offering testing and researching acoustics. He made a major discovery in acoustics in 2007 and has presented invited papers at the ASA meeting in Portland in May, 2009, and the INCE meeting in Ottawa, Canada in August 2009. He will present invited papers at ASA in Baltimore in May, 2010.
